Negative Pressure Rooms

Modular Isolation Rooms, Quarantine Rooms, and Anterooms to Keep Your Facility Safe

What is a Negative Pressure Room?

A negative pressure room is an isolated room that has lower air pressure than the spaces outside of it. The drop in air pressure is achieved by filtering the air as it exits the room.

The purpose of a negative pressure room is to ensure no contaminants from within the room can exit the room and harm outside environments or individuals. For this reason, negative pressure rooms are often used in hospitals and specialized medical centers to isolate people with airborne infectious diseases.

Negative pressure rooms are also commonly referred to as isolation rooms or quarantine rooms.

Benefits of a Modular Negative Pressure Room

Like any modular structure, a modular negative pressure room consists of high-quality, precision-manufactured components that are simple to install and perform well for years. Straight from our experts at Starrco, here are some of the key benefits they offer.

Keep Your Facility, Staff, and Patients Safe

The most important benefit that negative pressure rooms offer is that they help keep your facility, staff, and patients safe from potential health hazards. Their isolating features and filtering capabilities can help your healthcare facility meet critical health and safety standards.

High-Quality Materials

Using a modular approach, Starrco’s negative pressure rooms are constructed with precision-engineered materials that are made in a controlled environment offsite. This ensures a high level of quality, durability, and safety that you can trust for years into the future.

Customizable to Fit Your Needs

One of the many benefits of building modular is unique customization abilities. Whatever your specifications are (size, filtration, aesthetics, etc.), Starrco’s modular structures can accommodate them.

Fast & Easy Installation

Starrco’s prefabricated, modular systems are fast and easy to install. In fact, an 8’ x 8’ quarantine room can be built in as little as six hours! If you need a negative pressure room for your healthcare facility, we can deliver with some of the fastest turnaround times in the industry.

Minimal Construction Mess

The modular construction process comes with minimal mess, disruption, and downtime to your everyday operations — far less than traditional construction. You can carry on mostly as usual, which is a huge benefit in the healthcare environment you’re in.

Versatile, Long-Term Solution

Starrco’s negative pressure rooms can grow and adapt to whatever your facility’s needs are. Their modular design allows for easy expansion, reconfiguration, relocation, and renovation — which also makes them a very long-term, cost-effective solution.

PE-Stamped Blueprints Upon Request

Upon request, Starrco can supply drawings of your negative pressure room with a professional engineer’s stamp. This provides evidence that your new structure will meet local codes and construction standards. Make sure to request these blueprints when you submit your RFQ.

Modular Negative Pressure Room Features & Capabilities

All of Starrco’s modular negative pressure rooms are built to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 170 requirements. These specify negative air pressure, air change rates of 6-12 changes per hour, temperature guidance, and filtration conditions that direct air exhaust to the outside of the building or via a HEPA-filtered recirculation process.

Standard Features and Capabilities

In addition, Starrco’s negative pressure rooms also come with these standard features and capabilities:

  • Directed airflow
  • Gasketed ceiling grid for proper seal
  • Smooth, sealed ceiling tiles and wall surfaces (FRP, HDPE)
  • Privacy and safety features
  • Self-closing doors
Custom Features and Capabilities

One of the advantages of modular construction is customization. Starrco’s modular negative pressure rooms are also able to be outfitted with the following optional features and capabilities:

  • Attached anteroom
  • Coved floors
  • Windows or full-glass walls
  • HEPA filtration
  • Redundant ventilation equipment
  • Pass-throughs
  • Power outlets
  • Modular electric
Negative Pressure Room Applications

Negative pressure rooms are most commonly used as isolation rooms in hospitals or specialized medical centers to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even has standards written about them and refers to them as airborne infection isolation rooms (AIIRs).

Negative pressure rooms, or AIIRs, are critical in controlling indoor air quality in a triage or emergency environment. They are required by the CDC as a means to protect the public from the spread of disease. Patients who are quarantined in isolation rooms usually have illnesses like:

  • Tuberculosis
  • SARS
  • H5N1
  • COVID-19
  • Coughing conditions that may pose a risk to hospital staff and guests
